Legal SEO is one of the most competitive categories in Canadian search. When this Mississauga law firm came to us, it had almost no organic traffic, its Google Maps listing was buried and competitors with shorter track records were outranking it. This is the full story of what we found, what we changed and how the rankings moved month by month.

The starting point: a strong firm with almost no visibility

The firm had practiced in Mississauga for several years and built a solid reputation through referrals. On Google, it was invisible. A search for its main practice area plus "Mississauga" showed the website on page 8. Its Google Business Profile had been set up once, barely optimized and had fewer than five reviews.

Several competing firms with less experience sat comfortably on page 1 simply because they had invested in SEO. We see this pattern across Canadian legal markets: the best lawyers are not always the ones ranking, the ones ranking are the ones whose online presence was built properly.

The brief was clear: reach page 1 in Mississauga for the firm's main practice areas, get into the Google Maps top 3 and do it without any tactic that could put the site at risk. Legal sits in what Google calls "Your Money or Your Life" topics, so quality and trust are judged more strictly than in most industries.

Why legal SEO is different

Thin content, bought backlinks and low-trust sites carry far higher penalty risk for law firms than for most businesses. Everything we do for legal clients is built on sustainable, editorial-quality work that holds up over time.

The audit: what was holding the firm back

Before writing a word or building a link, we ran a full audit. That is where the strategy came from.

Technical problems

Mobile pages took over five seconds to load. The site had no schema markup, so Google had no structured information about the firm, its location or its practice areas. Several service pages competed for the same keywords, and many URLs were long auto-generated strings.

Content gaps

Each practice area page was only 200 to 350 words, with no FAQs, no process explanations and nothing tying the firm to Mississauga. Competing pages on page 1 had years of deeper content.

Off-page problems

The backlink profile was almost empty. The Google Business Profile had name, address and phone details that did not match the website, almost no photos and no service descriptions.

The strategy: four tracks in the right order

Legal SEO needs sequencing. Building links to pages that are slow and thin wastes authority, so we fixed the foundation first and layered everything else on top.

Technical SEO foundation

Fix speed, add LocalBusiness, LegalService and FAQPage schema, clean up URLs and set canonical tags so pages stop competing with each other.

Content and on-page SEO

Rewrite every service page to 800+ words with clear headings, FAQ sections and genuine Mississauga context, with one target keyword per page.

Google Business Profile and local authority

Rebuild the profile with accurate categories, services and photos, start a review process and fix citations across Canadian legal and business directories.

Editorial backlinks

Once the pages were ready, earn links from legal publications, Canadian business sites and respected directories through manual outreach. No paid links.

The keywords: where they started and where they finished

We chose 11 priority keywords with real monthly search volume in Mississauga and the GTA. None were on page 1, and most sat on pages 5 to 9, which in practice means almost no traffic.

Practice area details are kept general to protect client confidentiality. Every keyword in the table is a real search term the firm now ranks for on page 1.

Month by month: how the rankings moved

Rankings do not flip overnight. They move in a pattern that follows how Google re-crawls and re-evaluates your changes.

  1. Month 1

    Foundation work and technical gains

Mobile load time dropped from 5.4 seconds to under 2 through image optimization, caching and removing unneeded scripts. Full schema went live, the Google Business Profile was rebuilt with 14 professional photos and complete services, the sitemap was submitted and 23 crawl errors were fixed. Rankings barely moved yet, because Google had not re-evaluated the pages.

    • Page speed fixed
    • Schema live
    • Profile rebuilt
    • 23 crawl errors fixed
  2. Month 2

    Content expansion and first movement

Every service page was rewritten with keyword targeting, FAQ sections and Mississauga-specific content, and two neighbourhood pages launched. Five of the eleven keywords climbed from pages 5 to 9 up to pages 2 to 4, and the profile started appearing in the map pack for two lower-competition searches.

    • 5 keywords on pages 2 to 4
    • 2 new location pages
    • First map pack appearances
  3. Month 3

    Backlinks land and rankings accelerate

Editorial placements came through on three Canadian legal publications, one Ontario business news site and two respected legal directories. Nine of the eleven keywords reached page 1, the firm entered the Google Maps top 3 for its two biggest searches and organic traffic was up 180 percent.

    • 9 of 11 on page 1
    • Top 3 Google Maps
    • +180% organic traffic
  4. Month 4

    Full page 1 coverage

The last two keywords moved up after their pages were expanded with answers to the exact questions Google was showing for those searches, plus one more editorial link. All eleven keywords were on page 1, organic traffic was up 340 percent and the firm was receiving enquiries from Google every week.

    • All 11 on page 1
    • +340% organic traffic
    • Weekly Google enquiries

What made the biggest difference

No single change did it. The combination and the order did. If we had to rank the three highest-impact changes:

Schema markup was badly underestimated

LocalBusiness and LegalService schema gave Google a clear, structured picture of the firm and where it operates. Within about six weeks of adding it, the firm went from occasional map pack appearances to consistent top 3 positions for several searches. Most Canadian law firm websites still have no proper schema.

Content depth changed how Google judged each page

Moving from 250-word pages to 800 to 1,200 words with structured FAQs was one of the clearest turning points in the data. The new content answered the questions people actually search when they need legal help and made each page a real resource instead of a thin sales page.

Editorial backlinks unlocked the last positions

The technical and content work brought nine keywords to page 1. The editorial links in months 3 and 4 pushed the last two over the line. In competitive legal markets, links from relevant, trusted sites are often what separates position 8 from position 2.

What the client experienced

By month 3, the firm heard for the first time from new clients who said they found it on Google. By month 4, several enquiries a week came directly from search. Those enquiries converted well because people searching a specific practice area in Mississauga are already looking for a lawyer, not browsing.

The bottom line

In four months, all eleven priority keywords reached page 1, organic traffic rose 340 percent, the Google Maps listing held a top 3 position and the firm received Google enquiries every week. No shortcuts, no paid links, just a properly sequenced strategy executed consistently.

What this means for other Canadian law firms

The same dynamics apply in every Canadian city. The firms on page 1 are not necessarily better lawyers; someone built their online presence properly. Every month a firm stays off page 1, potential clients go to a competitor, and the cost of one lost retained client is usually far higher than the cost of the SEO work needed to compete.

Google's own Search Essentials make the same point: sites that rank consistently are technically sound, genuinely useful and trusted by other credible websites. There is no shortcut around those fundamentals in legal search. If you run a firm, our SEO for lawyers service follows the same process, and our dental SEO case study shows it working in another regulated industry. FAQ

Law firm SEO questions

How long does SEO take for a law firm?

In this case study, the first ranking movement came in month 2, nine of eleven keywords reached page 1 in month 3 and all eleven were on page 1 by month 4. Timelines depend on the city, practice area and how strong the site is to begin with.

Why is legal SEO harder than other industries?

Legal is a "Your Money or Your Life" topic, so Google judges trust and quality more strictly. Competitors have often invested in SEO for years, and shortcuts like bought links carry much higher risk for law firms.

What matters most for law firm rankings?

A fast, technically sound site with schema markup, deep practice area pages with FAQs, a complete Google Business Profile with genuine reviews and editorial backlinks from relevant, trusted websites.

How much does law firm SEO cost?

MarketingFlow plans start at $99 a month, with Growth at $290 and Authority at $499, which also includes a 3-page SEO website. Competitive legal markets usually need Growth or Authority. See our SEO pricing for what each plan includes.
