How Much Does SEO Cost in Canada?
Honest SEO pricing: how agencies charge, typical monthly ranges, what you should get for your money and how to spot a bad quote. Our own prices are listed in full, so you can compare without a sales call.
- Plans from $99/month
- No setup fee
- Month to month
In Canada, ongoing SEO for a small or medium business is usually paid as a monthly plan. Agency retainers commonly run from about $500 to $5,000 or more a month, depending on competition, how many services and areas you target, and how much content and link building is included. MarketingFlow plans start at $99 a month for one location, with Growth at $290 and Authority at $499, all month to month with no setup fee.
"How much does SEO cost?" is one of the first questions every business owner asks, and one of the hardest to get a straight answer to. Many agencies hide their prices behind a sales call, and quotes for what sounds like the same work can differ by thousands of dollars a month.
This page explains how SEO is priced in Canada, what actually drives the cost, what you should get for your money and how to tell a fair quote from a poor one. The ranges below are general market ranges based on what Canadian agencies commonly quote and publish, not a formal survey, so treat them as a guide rather than exact figures. After 9 years and more than 1,500 campaigns, we would rather show you real prices than make you guess.

Pricing models
How SEO is priced
There are four common ways to pay for SEO. Most small and medium businesses end up on a monthly plan, because SEO results build over months rather than days.
| Pricing model | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly plan or retainer | A fixed monthly fee for ongoing work such as content, links, fixes and reporting | Most businesses that want steady growth | Long contracts and vague scopes with no stated deliverables |
| One-time project | A fixed price for a defined job, such as an audit, a site migration or a set of new pages | Fixing specific problems or launching a new site | Projects that end before the work has time to show results |
| Hourly consulting | You pay for an expert's time, usually for advice or training | Teams that do the work in-house and need direction | Hours that add up without clear outcomes |
| Pay for performance | Fees tied to rankings or leads | Rarely the best fit for small businesses | Agencies chasing easy keywords that do not bring customers |
Market ranges
Typical SEO costs in Canada
Broad ranges for monthly SEO with an agency. Where your business falls depends mostly on competition and scope.
| Type of business | Typical monthly range | What the budget usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Single-location local business in a smaller market | About $100 to $750 | Google Business Profile, on-page fixes, a few local pages and a small number of links |
| Local business in a big, competitive city | About $300 to $2,500 | More content, more links and several neighbourhood or service pages |
| Multi-location business | About $750 to $4,000 | A profile and page for each location, plus shared authority building |
| Online store | About $1,000 to $5,000+ | Category and product optimization, technical fixes and content at scale |
| National or B2B company | About $2,000 to $10,000+ | Large content programs, digital PR and competitive link building |
These ranges overlap because two businesses of the same size can face very different competition. For GTA pricing, see our guide to how much SEO costs in Toronto.
Cost drivers
What drives the cost of SEO
When two quotes look very different, these are usually the reasons.
Competition
The stronger the websites already ranking, the more content and links you need to pass them.
Services and areas
Ranking for five services in three cities is a much bigger job than one service in one town.
Your website's condition
A slow site with technical problems needs fixing before growth work pays off.
Content volume
Blog posts and new pages take time to research and write. Plans with more articles cost more.
Link building quality
Real outreach links take effort. Cheap bulk links are inexpensive because they are low quality.
Speed and reporting
Faster results in competitive markets mean more work each month, and detailed reporting adds accountability.
Low prices
Is cheap SEO worth it?
A low price is not automatically a bad sign, and a high price is not automatically a good one. What matters is whether the scope is clear and the work is real.
Our Starter plan is $99 a month because it is focused: one location, essential on-page work, a small number of quality outreach links and a monthly report. It is not a cut-down version of a $2,000 plan pretending to do everything. In less competitive markets, focused work like this is often enough to start winning local searches.
Be careful with very cheap offers that promise a lot, such as hundreds of backlinks for a few dollars or guaranteed first-place rankings. Those usually rely on spam links or easy keywords nobody searches.
Red flags
Red flags in an SEO quote
No list of deliverables
You should know what will be done each month: links, pages, posts and fixes.
Long lock-in contracts
Six or twelve months with exit fees removes the need to earn your business.
Guaranteed number one rankings
Nobody can honestly guarantee Google rankings.
Secret methods
If an agency will not explain where links come from, assume the worst.
Reports with no business numbers
Rankings alone are not enough. Ask about clicks, calls and leads.
Large setup fees
A big upfront fee before any results puts all the risk on you.
Value
How to judge whether SEO is worth the cost
The simplest way to think about SEO cost is to compare it with the value of a new customer.
Here is an example with made-up numbers to show the method. A plumbing company earns an average of $450 per job and its SEO plan costs $290 a month. If better rankings bring just two extra jobs a month, that is $900 in revenue for $290 of SEO. As rankings grow, the cost stays the same while the number of extra jobs can keep increasing.
Compare that with paid ads, where you pay for every click and traffic stops when spending stops. Many businesses use both while SEO builds, then rely less on ads as organic rankings grow.
Be realistic about timing. Local businesses often see Google Maps movement within 30 to 60 days, while competitive city-wide or national searches usually take 3 to 6 months or longer. Judge progress on clicks, calls and leads over months, not on one keyword in one week.

SEO cost questions
How much does SEO cost per month in Canada?
Agency SEO commonly ranges from about $500 to $5,000 or more a month, depending on competition and scope. MarketingFlow plans are $99, $290 and $499 a month, month to month with no setup fee.
Why do SEO prices vary so much?
Prices depend on competition, how many services and areas you target, the condition of your website, and how much content and link building is included each month.
Is $99 a month enough for SEO?
For a single location in a less competitive market, focused work like on-page fixes and a few quality links can be a good start. Competitive markets usually need more content and links, which larger plans include.
How long does SEO take to pay off?
Local businesses often see Google Maps movement in 30 to 60 days. Competitive and national searches usually take 3 to 6 months or longer.
Should I sign a long SEO contract?
It is not necessary. Month-to-month plans let you leave if the work is not delivering. Every MarketingFlow plan can be cancelled with 7 days' written notice.
Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?
Over time it usually is, because you do not pay for each click and rankings keep bringing visits. Many businesses use ads for quick leads while SEO builds. See how much Google Ads costs.
